A chirurgeon was a historical term for a medical practitioner who performed surgery. The word itself is a corruption of the Middle English term "chirurgian," which in turn derives from the Old French "cirurgien." This ultimately traces back to the Greek words "cheir" meaning hand and "ergon" meaning work, reflecting the manual nature of their practice.

Chirurgeons were distinct from physicians, who primarily focused on internal medicine and relied on methods like bloodletting, purging, and herbal remedies. Surgery, in the era of the chirurgeon, was often considered a craft rather than a learned profession. Chirurgeons were frequently barbers, blacksmiths, or other tradespeople who acquired surgical skills through apprenticeship or practical experience rather than formal university education.

Their scope of practice typically included wound treatment, setting broken bones, amputations, and the removal of superficial tumors or foreign objects. Anesthesia and antiseptic techniques were largely unknown or rudimentary, making surgical procedures extremely painful and prone to infection. The development of modern medicine, with its emphasis on scientific understanding, specialized training, and advanced techniques, gradually led to the obsolescence of the term "chirurgeon" in favor of "surgeon."
