It is typically described as a lightweight, exceptionally hard ceramic or ceramic-like composite with high thermal stability and chemical inertness. The name cetlit is a neologism used across different works, and there is no single canonical etymology.

In narrative depictions, cetlit often features a favorable strength-to-weight ratio and the ability to retain structural integrity at temperatures beyond those of conventional ceramics. Some accounts describe anisotropic properties that enable enhanced shielding or selective electrical behavior when doped with metallic elements.

Two common fictional production paths are proposed: natural formation in rare meteorites or asteroidal bodies, and laboratory synthesis using advanced processing techniques such as high-energy plasma methods, solid-state reactions, or chemical vapor deposition. Its reputed resistance to corrosion and radiation makes cetlit a preferred material in spacefaring contexts within fiction.

Applications within stories typically include spacecraft hulls, armor, engine components, and reactor shielding. The material’s imagined properties are often used to explore themes such as durability under extreme conditions, the cost and logistics of producing and transporting advanced materials, and the implications of scarce supply.
