Centerpieces are decorative focal points placed in the center of a table or other surface to enhance the setting. They are designed to be visually engaging while not obstructing conversation or sight lines. Centerpieces are used in daily dining, celebrations, and events, and they can reflect season, theme, or personal taste.

Common types include floral centerpieces, which use fresh or dried flowers and foliage; candle centerpieces that incorporate lighting; and mixed-media pieces that combine objects, sculpture, or fruit. Edible centerpieces, such as a display of fruit or desserts, are also used. Materials range from natural elements (flowers, leaves, branches, stones) to artificial ones (silk flowers, faux greenery) and from glassware and metals to ceramic vessels.

Design considerations include scale and height relative to the table, color harmony, texture, and balance. For conversation, arrangements are typically kept low to allow eye contact; on long tables, multiple low arrangements or evenly spaced pieces are common. Stability and safety are important, especially with candles or water-filled vases, and arrangements should be placed to avoid crowding place settings or obstructing paths.

Placement and maintenance vary by type. Fresh arrangements may require regular trimming and water replenishment; artificial centerpieces require dusting. If candles are used, ensure proper flame safety and clearance from fabrics or decorations.

Historically, centerpieces arose in banquets to display abundance and wealth and have since evolved into a flexible design element for weddings, holidays, and private meals, reflecting mood and season.
