A casket is a funerary container used to hold a deceased person for burial or cremation. In North America, the term typically denotes a rectangular, two-piece container with a separate lid, whereas the term coffin is more commonly used for a six-sided box that tapers at the head and feet.

Caskets are made from wood, metal, or synthetic materials. Common woods include oak, maple, cherry, and walnut, often with veneers or finishes. Metals include steel (various gauges), stainless steel, copper, and bronze. Some caskets are biodegradable, made of unfinished wood or other natural materials for green burials. Interiors are lined with fabric such as crepe or satin and padded.

Design features can include two-piece construction with a removable lid or a one-piece top; external hardware such as handles, nameplates, and decorative trim; and options like removable cushions or special liners. Some caskets have a raised lid suitable for viewing during open-casket ceremonies.

Usage and regulation: Caskets are used for viewing services, interment, or cremation. In cremation, materials must be compatible with the process; metals may be left inside or removed depending on local rules. Consumer protections in some regions require clear disclosure of product features and pricing.

Cultural variation: Although common in many Western societies, burial practices differ by religion, region, and personal preference, and alternatives such as simple shrouds, urns, or biodegradable caskets are used in various traditions.
