Cacheoptimized is a term used to describe software, data structures, and algorithms that are designed to maximize the effective use of a processor’s cache memory. The central aim is to minimize cache misses and to exploit temporal locality (reusing recently accessed data) and spatial locality (accessing contiguous memory) in the memory hierarchy to improve performance.

Techniques commonly associated with cache optimization include choosing memory layouts that promote sequential or stride-friendly access, such as structure of arrays versus array of structures. Loop transformations like tiling or blocking help keep working data subset sizes within the L1 or L2 caches. Loop interchange, fusion, and careful data alignment or padding can also enhance cache locality. Reducing pointer chasing, improving spatial locality, and using memory allocators or pools that produce cache-friendly layouts are typical practices. Software prefetching and compiler hints may further improve cache hit rates on target hardware.

Cache-oblivious and cache-aware algorithms are both used in cache optimization. Cache-oblivious algorithms aim to perform well across unknown cache sizes through recursive, divide-and-conquer strategies, while cache-aware approaches tailor designs to known hardware characteristics.

Limitations and trade-offs exist. Cache-optimized code can complicate readability, hinder parallelization, or reduce portability across architectures. Performance gains depend on hardware characteristics such as cache size, line width, and memory bandwidth, so profiling and tuning are often necessary using tools that measure cache misses and memory traffic.

Applications include high-performance computing, numerical linear algebra, graphics, and data-intensive workloads where memory access patterns dominate execution time.
