Cacatuoides is a genus of cichlid fish native to South America. The most well-known species is Amatitlania cacatuoides, commonly called the Cockatoo Cichlid. These fish are popular in the aquarium hobby due to their striking appearance and interesting behavior.

Amatitlania cacatuoides are characterized by their vibrant coloration, which can vary widely depending on location and breeding. Males typically display brighter colors, often featuring red or orange on their flanks, while females may have more subdued tones. A prominent feature is the dorsal fin, which in males can be extended into a point, resembling a crest. They are a relatively small cichlid, with adults usually reaching a maximum length of around 10-15 centimeters.

These fish are native to river systems in Central America, particularly in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. They inhabit a range of environments, from slow-moving streams to larger rivers, often preferring areas with submerged wood and vegetation that provide hiding places. Cacatuoides are omnivorous, feeding on a diet of insects, small crustaceans, and plant matter in the wild.

In captivity, Cacatuoides are known for their territorial nature, especially during breeding. They are substrate spawners, laying their eggs on a hard surface, and both parents are involved in guarding the fry.
