The term is most commonly associated with electric arc furnaces (EAF) used in steelmaking and metallurgical processing. A bågverk contrasts with arc welding equipment in that it is designed for bulk heating and processing of metal charges rather than joining metals with a localized arc.

Principle of operation and types: In an electric arc furnace, an electric arc is established between carbon electrodes and a feedstock such as scrap metal or ferrous alloys. The intense heat generated melts the charge and allows refining and alloying operations. There are several variants, including electric arc furnaces used for steelmaking and submerged arc furnaces (SAF) used for producing ferroalloys and other alloys, where the arc is largely submerged in a molten slag. The furnace lining is refractory and cooling systems protect surrounding structures.

Applications and significance: Bågverk are central to modern steel production, recycling of scrap steel, and the production of various alloys. They enable high recycling rates and flexible operation, can operate with variable feedstock, and are capable of adjusting alloy compositions rapidly. Compared with traditional blast furnace routes, electric arc-based processes can reduce certain emissions when powered by lower-carbon electricity and support circular economies through scrap utilization.
