Bustfangs are a type of venomous snake found primarily in the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. They belong to the family Elapidae and are closely related to cobras and kraits. The term "bustfang" is derived from their distinctive venom delivery system, which consists of short, fixed fangs located near the front of the upper jaw, rather than the longer, folding fangs seen in vipers.

Bustfangs are small to medium-sized snakes, typically reaching lengths of 60 to 100 centimeters (2 to 3.3 feet). Their bodies are slender, and they exhibit a variety of color patterns, often featuring shades of brown, gray, or black with lighter markings. Some species display bright yellow or orange scales, which may serve as a warning to potential predators. Their venom is neurotoxic, affecting the nervous system and potentially causing paralysis, though some species also possess cytotoxic components that can damage tissues.

These snakes are primarily nocturnal and arboreal, spending much of their time in trees or dense vegetation. They are opportunistic feeders, preying on small vertebrates such as frogs, lizards, and other snakes. Bustfangs are generally shy and avoid confrontation with humans, but they may bite if threatened or provoked. Envenomation can be serious, requiring immediate medical attention, including antivenom treatment.

Due to their elusive nature and the remote habitats they inhabit, bustfangs are not well-studied, and many species remain poorly documented. Conservation efforts are limited, but habitat destruction and deforestation pose threats to their survival. Some species are occasionally kept in captivity by reptile enthusiasts, though they require specialized care and handling due to their venomous nature.
