Bremsesystem (Swedish for braking system) is a collection of components that converts a vehicle’s kinetic energy into heat to slow or stop motion. The system responds when the driver presses the brake pedal, which typically activates a hydraulic circuit that increases friction at the wheels via pads or shoes pressed against rotors or drums. In a hydraulic system, force is transmitted through brake fluid from a master cylinder to calipers at each wheel or to wheel cylinders in drum brakes.

Most passenger cars use disc brakes on at least the front axle. Disc brakes consist of a rotor, a caliper with pistons, and brake pads. Drum brakes use a hollow drum and shoes that press outward inside the drum. A typical setup may combine discs on the front and drums on the rear; some models use all discs.

Electronic and programmable features provide enhanced control. Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) modulate brake pressure to prevent wheel lock during hard braking. Electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) adjusts the balance between axles. Brake assist increases braking pressure during emergency stops. Many vehicles also include electronic parking brakes, brake-by-wire concepts, or stability control systems (ESC) that intervene to keep the vehicle on course.

Hybrid and electric vehicles may employ regenerative braking, using the electric motor as a generator to recover energy while contributing to deceleration. This is often combined with friction brakes to achieve smooth stopping and adequate heat management.

Wheel wear and heat can affect braking performance. Pads or shoes wear over time, rotors or drums can score or warp, and brake fluid absorbs moisture and loses efficiency. Regular inspection, pad/shoe replacement, rotor resurfacing or replacement, and brake-fluid renewal are standard maintenance tasks. Signs of problems include squealing, a soft or sinking brake pedal, pulling to one side, or longer stopping distances.

Braking performance is governed by vehicle safety regulations and testing protocols, which vary by jurisdiction. Common considerations include stopping distance, fade resistance, pedal feel, and redundancy. Standards and testing may reference regional regulations such as ECE or FMVSS, along with general safety standards for automotive systems.
