bothies
A bothy is a basic, unmanned shelter situated in remote rural areas of Scotland, and, to a lesser extent, in northern England and Wales. They provide free, open access shelter for hikers, climbers, and travellers when other lodging is unavailable. Historically used by shepherds and travellers, modern bothies are simple buildings offering temporary refuge rather than permanent housing.
The word derives from the Scots Gaelic bothan, meaning hut or lodging.
