In Dutch usage, borduursel can refer to a completed embroidered piece as well as to the activity of embroidery itself. The plural borduursels denotes multiple such pieces or motifs, which can be added to garments, linens, or decorative textiles.

In Dutch and Flemish traditions, borduursels have appeared in household textiles, religious textiles, art samplers, and regional costume. Museums and archives may preserve intact borduursels as part of cultural heritage. The term emphasizes both the process and the resulting decorative pieces rather than a single standardized style.
