Boatsignaling refers to the set of methods and devices used by vessels to convey information about status, intent, or emergencies to other boats, shore stations, or rescue services. Signaling can be visual, audible, or electronic, and is governed by international and national rules to prevent collisions and aid rescue.

Visual signaling includes the use of signal flags, day shapes, and navigational lights. The International Code of Signals provides standardized flags and flag combinations that convey messages such as distress, request for assistance, or course and speed actions. Lights, such as fixed or flashing patterns, supplement daytime signals and are essential in navigation at night or in reduced visibility. Historical methods like semaphore and flag hoists illustrate the evolution of visual communication at sea.

Audible signaling uses sound-producing devices, including horns, bells, and whistles, to indicate maneuvers or to warn other vessels in fog or poor visibility. The meanings of standard sound signals are defined by conventions such as the collision avoidance rules.

Electronic signaling has become central in modern boating. VHF radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) enables distress alerts and vessel-to-vessel communication. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) broadcasts a vessel’s identity, position, and course to nearby traffic. Emergency signaling devices such as EPIRBs, personal locator beacons, distress flares, and signaling mirrors enhance safety and rapid location of vessels in distress.

Regulatory frameworks, including the International Code of Signals and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), provide the standards for interpretation and use of these signals.
