Blokktrükikunst, also known as woodcut printing, is a relief printing technique where an image is carved into the surface of a block of wood. The artist carves away the parts of the block that they do not want to be printed, leaving the image raised. Ink is then applied to the raised surface, and the block is pressed onto paper or fabric to transfer the image. This method originated in East Asia, likely in China, and was widely used for printing text and images on paper and textiles.

In Europe, blokktrükikunst gained prominence in the late Middle Ages and was a significant medium for artistic expression and the dissemination of information before the invention of the printing press. Early woodcuts were often used for religious imagery, playing cards, and book illustrations. The development of more sophisticated tools and techniques allowed for greater detail and nuance in woodcut prints. Artists would select wood blocks, often made from fruitwoods like apple or pear, or boxwood, known for their fine grain and hardness. The process involved meticulous carving with chisels, gouges, and knives.

The printmaker would then ink the carved block using a roller or a dabber. The paper was laid over the inked block, and pressure was applied, either by hand rubbing with a baren or using a printing press. The resulting print captured the texture of the wood grain and the marks of the carving tools, giving blokktrükikunst a distinct aesthetic. Later, artists like Albrecht Dürer elevated the medium to new heights of artistic sophistication, creating detailed and complex compositions. While other printing methods have since become more prevalent, blokktrükikunst remains an important historical printmaking technique and continues to be practiced by artists today for its unique visual qualities.
