Bindkunst, the craft of bookbinding, refers to the construction, covering and decoration of books. It combines structural work that creates a durable book block with surface ornamentation and finishing details. The term covers traditional bindings as well as conservation and restoration, and includes the production of new bindings that reflect historical styles or contemporary design.

Historically, Bindkunst emerged with the codex and evolved through medieval scriptoriums into early modern bookbinding. From the 15th to 17th centuries leather bindings with blind or gold tooling became common, and decorative techniques such as marbled papers and raised cords appeared on spines. Centers in Italy, the Low Countries, Germany, and France shaped many styles and workshops contributed to the diffusion of binding traditions across Europe.

Techniques and materials include sewing gatherings and attaching them to boards, spine linings, endbands, and endpapers. Covers may be leather, vellum, parchment, or cloth, often with decorative tooling, inlays, or surface decoration. Tools include bone folders, knives, punches, and presses. Common bindings range from simple limp wrappers to rigid, gilded, and blind-tooled bindings, with marbled or otherwise decorated endpapers and carefully finished edges.

In modern contexts Bindkunst is practiced by binders, conservators, and artists. Institutions preserve historic bindings, study of historical methods informs contemporary craft, and new bindings can be commissioned as art objects or limited editions. The field combines artisanal skill with historical knowledge to sustain both functional books and cultural objects.
