Covers

Covers are general terms referring to any layer that sits over something else to protect, conceal, or present it. The word is used across several domains, notably music, publishing, and consumer goods, and can refer to both protective layers and reinterpretations.

In music, a cover is a new performance or recording of a song that was previously released by another artist. Covers may differ in arrangement, genre, or tempo from the original. They can expand a song's audience and are subject to copyright and licensing; most jurisdictions require permission or payment of royalties to the original songwriter or rights holder.

In publishing and art, a book's cover is the outer packaging that protects the content and communicates its appeal. Hardcover dust jackets and paperback covers carry typography and imagery that signal genre, tone, and target readers. Cover design influences discoverability and sales, and may be updated across editions.

Covers also refer to protective coverings used on objects and structures. Protective covers shield equipment, furniture, and electronics from dust, moisture, and damage; weatherproof or insulating covers extend life and safety. Roofing and exterior coverings, such as shingles, tiles, or metal sheeting, protect interiors from the elements and contribute to energy efficiency.
