A songwriter is a person who writes songs, typically focusing on lyrics, melodies, or both. In most modern music industries, songwriting is distinct from performing and recording, though many artists write and perform their own material. A songwriter who writes both words and music is often called a composer, while someone who concentrates on lyrics is a lyricist and someone who writes only the music is a composer or melody writer. Many songwriters work in teams, pairing a lyricist with a melody writer, or collaborating with producers and arrangers to shape a finished track.

Creating a song usually involves developing a concept, writing verses and a chorus, and establishing a memorable hook or melody. Songwriters may draw on personal experience, storytelling, or current events, and may draft multiple versions—called demos—before presenting the song to artists, publishers, or recording studios.

Rights and economics: copyright for songs vests with the writer(s). Songs generate mechanical royalties from reproductions, performance royalties from public performances, and synchronization licenses for use in film, TV, or ads. In many countries, performing rights organizations collect royalties on behalf of writers and publishers. Many songwriters work with music publishers who administer licensing, rights, and advances, while others self-publish.

Industry role: Songwriters contribute across genres—from pop and rock to country, hip-hop, and film scores. Recognition includes awards and halls of fame that honor contributions to music. Although formal training can help, successful songwriting often relies on habit, craft, networking, and building a catalog of recorded works.
