In musical theatre and film, lyricists typically write songs that advance the plot, illuminate character, or convey emotional states, while the composer shapes the musical setting.

Craft and technique involve attention to meter, rhyme, syllable counts, phrasing, and vocal ease. Lyricists must tailor language to fit a given musical tempo, structure (such as verses, choruses, and bridges), and the singer’s range. They also consider character voice, story context, and audience impact, often revising lines through workshops, rehearsals, and multiple drafts.

Contexts and forms vary. In pop, rock, or jazz, a lyricist may collaborate with various composers or, in some cases, write lyrics for songs where another person writes the music. In theatre and opera, the term librettist is closely related; a librettist writes dialogue and lyrics, while a separate lyricist may focus on standalone songs within a work.

Notable lyricists include Oscar Hammerstein II, Lorenz Hart, Stephen Sondheim, Tim Rice, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, among others. Copyright generally resides in the lyricist or their publisher, subject to contractual arrangements.
