barokkinen

Barokkinen is a Finnish adjective meaning baroque-like or in the Baroque style. The term appears in Finnish art history, architecture, design and music criticism to describe works or features that evoke characteristics associated with the Baroque. It is formed from barokki (baroque) plus the suffix -inen, which marks resemblance or relation.

In practice, barokkinen describes visual arts and design that emphasize ornamentation, drama, movement and theatricality. In architecture, barokkinen forms may include dynamic facades, curved outlines, grand staircases and rich sculptural detail. In painting and sculpture, it signals the use of strong contrasts of light and shadow, emotional intensity and diagonally composed scenes. In furniture and decorative arts, it points to lavish gilding, scrollwork and elaborate ornament.

The term can be applied to historical works from the Baroque period (roughly 17th–early 18th century), but barokkinen also appears in contemporary criticism for works that deliberately imitate or reinterpret Baroque aesthetics, whether as pastiche, revival or assimilation into other styles. The distinction lies in stylistic character rather than strict periodization.

In Finnish discourse, barokkinen is commonly contrasted with klassismi (classicism) and rokoko (Rococo). It is used descriptively to situate a work within a broader European stylistic spectrum rather than to endorse a specific historical attribution.
