Banksman, also called a banksman, signaler, signalman, or spotter, is a person who directs the movement of heavy equipment and vehicles on worksites to prevent accidents. The role is common in construction, crane operations, and other activities involving large loads or restricted visibility. In some jurisdictions the role is described as a signalman or spotter.

In crane operations, the banksman stands at a safe point within the operator’s line of sight and provides signals to the crane operator to guide the load along the intended path. The banksman is responsible for ensuring the area around the lift is clear of workers, checking that rigging is secure, and communicating hazards clearly. They must be able to stop operations if signals are unclear or conditions change.

In vehicle and equipment movements, banksmen guide reversing trucks, forklifts, and other vehicles, using standardized hand signals or radio communications. They maintain a safe exclusion zone and keep pedestrians and other workers out of the path of the moving load.

Key duties include planning the lift or movement, conducting a brief with the operator, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, and maintaining a clear line of sight. They must never stand under a suspended load and should position themselves to see the operator and the load at all times.

Training and competence requirements vary by country, but banksmen are typically expected to have site safety training, familiarity with signaling methods, and the ability to communicate clearly under stress. Regular refreshers are common.
