Ballkicking is the act of striking a ball with the foot. The term covers a wide range of actions in both organized sport and informal play, from driving a ball toward a target to simply passing it to a teammate. Contact is usually made with the top or inside of the foot, depending on the desired trajectory and control.

In organized sports, kicking is central in several games. In association football (soccer), players commonly use an instep or side of the foot to shoot, pass, or control the ball. Kickball is built around kicking a pitched ball. In rugby and American football, kicking is used for tactical purposes (kicking for territory, scoring via field goals and punts). Field hockey uses a stick instead of the foot.

Technical considerations include choosing contact surface (instep for power, inner foot for accuracy), foot placement, body position, and follow-through. Toe pokes are fast but less accurate and can cause injury. Proper technique emphasizes brushing the ball, not striking with the toe alone, to avoid mis-kicks or injuries. Training often includes drills for accuracy, distance, and trajectory.

Safety and equipment: appropriate footwear, appropriate ball inflation, and playing surfaces affect performance and injury risk. Repeated or forceful kicks can strain the shin, knee, or groin; protective measures and conditioning reduce risk. In sports and recreational settings, deliberate kicking of another person’s body, especially the groin, is dangerous and typically illegal.
