It is commonly determined from a specified backwash flow rate and duration, with the basic equation V_bw = Q_bw × t_bw, where V_bw is the backwash volume, Q_bw is the backwash flow rate, and t_bw is the backwash time. The effective volume also depends on system piping, valves, and any pre- or post-backwash flushing.
