Backdoored is a term used to describe software, hardware, or systems that include a hidden method of bypassing normal security controls. A backdoor is a covert mechanism that allows access, often without standard authentication, and can be activated remotely or locally. Supply chain security, hardware attestation, and tamper-evident build processes help reduce risk. Ongoing monitoring, anomaly detection, vulnerability disclosure programs, and rapid incident response are important for limiting impact.

Notable cases: In 2015, a widely publicized incident affected Juniper Networks’ ScreenOS software, where a compromised code signing process led to backdoors in certain devices. Such events illustrate the broad range of potential origins and the importance of verification, transparency, and robust security practices.
