Avispapir is a term used in Scandinavian languages to refer to the paper used for newspapers and advertising inserts. In English, the material is usually called newsprint. It is a light-weight, low-cost, uncoated paper designed for high-speed printing and short print runs typical of newspapers and their inserts.

Characteristics of avispapir include a relatively low brightness and opacity compared with coated papers, a high content of short fibers, and good flexibility and foldability. It is typically produced from mechanical pulps, often with a portion of chemical pulp to improve strength and printability. The paper is commonly manufactured in weights roughly from 40 to 60 g/m², though lighter grades may be used for insert leaflets.

Applications center on the printing of daily and weekly newspapers. It is also used for advertising circulars, mail inserts, and other inexpensive print materials that require a printable, readily available stock. The uncoated surface accepts offset ink well and enables rapid production runs.

Environmental and recycling aspects are central to avispapir. The material is widely recycled and is commonly processed in newspaper recycling streams with de-inking. Many producers source fiber from sustainable forests, and ongoing improvements aim to reduce environmental impact throughout production and recycling processes.
