Avalanche rupture is a term that can refer to several phenomena, most commonly in the context of physics and engineering. It describes a situation where a material or system undergoes a sudden and often catastrophic failure or breakdown.

In solid-state physics, avalanche breakdown is a process that occurs in semiconductor devices, particularly in diodes and transistors. When a high voltage is applied across a semiconductor junction, the electric field can accelerate free charge carriers. These accelerated carriers can then collide with atoms in the crystal lattice, generating more electron-hole pairs through a process called impact ionization. This creates an exponential increase in the number of charge carriers, leading to a sudden surge in current. This effect is crucial for the operation of Zener diodes, which are designed to operate in their breakdown region, but can be destructive in other devices if not properly managed.

The term can also be applied more generally to describe any situation where a cumulative process reaches a critical threshold, resulting in a rapid and widespread failure. This might include concepts like cascading failures in complex systems, where the failure of one component triggers the failure of others, leading to a widespread collapse.
