The automotive ECU, or Electronic Control Unit, is a small computer within a vehicle responsible for controlling various engine and drivetrain functions. It is often referred to as the engine control module (ECM) or powertrain control module (PCM) when it also manages transmission and other powertrain components. The ECU receives data from a multitude of sensors throughout the vehicle, such as oxygen sensors, mass airflow sensors, throttle position sensors, and crankshaft position sensors. Based on this input, it processes the information and sends commands to actuators, including fuel injectors, ignition coils, and throttle bodies, to optimize engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions.
Modern vehicles utilize multiple ECUs, each dedicated to specific systems. These can include the transmission control
