They may analyze transits, progressions, and solar returns to forecast trends or themes. Branches of practice include natal astrology (individual profiles), horary astrology (answering specific questions), electional astrology (choosing auspicious dates), medical or financial astrology, and synastry (relationship compatibility). Techniques rely on ephemerides, house systems, aspects, and often astrology software or tables.

History and traditions: Astrological ideas emerged in ancient Mesopotamia and were refined in Hellenistic Greece, then spread to India (Jyotisha) and China, among other cultures. Modern astrology often blends elements from these traditions, with Western and Vedic (Indian) schools being particularly influential. Notable historical references include Claudius Ptolemy, who wrote influential treatises on astrological cosmology.

Reception and regulation: Astrology remains controversial in science, with critics citing a lack of empirical support. Practitioners may work independently or through associations and offer readings, reports, or ongoing consultations. Ethical considerations include consent, privacy, and clear communication of the scope and limits of the guidance provided.
