Anti-Irish sentiment refers to prejudice, discrimination, or hostility directed towards Irish people or things associated with Ireland. This animosity has historical roots, often stemming from religious, political, and economic factors. For centuries, Ireland was under British rule, and this power imbalance fueled negative stereotypes and discriminatory practices against the Irish population.

During the 19th century, large-scale Irish emigration, particularly to North America and Britain, due to events like the Great Famine, led to increased encounters with existing populations. In their new homes, many Irish immigrants faced nativism and xenophobia. They were often depicted as inferior, prone to violence, and a drain on social services. These stereotypes were reinforced through popular culture, political cartoons, and public discourse.

Religious differences, with the majority of Irish people being Catholic while Protestantism was dominant in Britain and parts of America, also played a significant role in fueling anti-Irish sentiment. Catholics were sometimes viewed with suspicion and distrust, accused of disloyalty and adherence to a foreign power (the Pope).

While overt discrimination has lessened in many parts of the world, anti-Irish sentiment can still manifest in subtle ways, including prejudiced jokes, stereotypes, and a lack of understanding or appreciation for Irish culture and history. Contemporary discussions about immigration and national identity can sometimes inadvertently echo historical anti-Irish tropes.
