Animosity refers to persistent, often deep-seated hostility or resentment toward someone or something. It is more than momentary anger or dislike; it implies ongoing antagonism and a tendency to act in ways that hinder or harm the target. The term derives from the Latin animus, meaning mind or spirit, and has long been used to describe enduring hostile feeling that persists across situations.

Causes of animosity include perceived injustices or betrayals, competition for resources or status, threats to identity or group membership, discrimination or prejudice, and long-standing cultural or political conflicts.
