Angioedeema is a medical condition characterized by swelling in the deeper layers of the skin, known as the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. It is often a rapid onset swelling that can affect various parts of the body, including the face, lips, tongue, throat, hands, and feet. Angioedeema can occur alongside hives, which are itchy, raised welts on the skin's surface, a condition known as angioedema-urticaria syndrome.

The causes of angioedeema are diverse. Hereditary angioedeema (HAE) is a rare genetic disorder resulting from a deficiency or dysfunction of a protein called C1 inhibitor. Acquired angioedeema can be triggered by allergic reactions to medications, foods, insect bites, or other allergens. Non-allergic forms can be associated with certain medical conditions or the use of specific drugs, such as ACE inhibitors used for high blood pressure. In some cases, the cause remains unknown, termed idiopathic angioedeema.

Symptoms of angioedeema include non-itchy swelling, often accompanied by a feeling of tightness or pain in the affected area. Swelling of the throat or tongue can be particularly dangerous as it may obstruct the airway, leading to breathing difficulties. Diagnosis is typically based on medical history, physical examination, and sometimes specific laboratory tests to identify the underlying cause. Treatment depends on the cause and severity, ranging from antihistamines and corticosteroids for allergic forms to more specialized medications for HAE and acquired angioedeema. Prompt medical attention is crucial, especially if airway compromise is suspected.
