The amandim is a small songbird found in South America, primarily in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Its scientific name is Oryzoborus crassirostris, though it is also commonly known by names such as the large-billed seed finch or great-billed seed finch. The amandim is characterized by its robust, conical bill, which is well-suited for cracking tough seeds, its primary food source.

Males typically exhibit striking plumage, often featuring a black head and breast contrasting with a chestnut or reddish-brown body. Females are generally more subdued in coloration, often appearing olive-brown. These birds inhabit a variety of open or semi-open environments, including grasslands, savannas, and agricultural areas, often near water sources. They are social birds, frequently seen foraging in small flocks. Their diet consists mainly of grass seeds, supplemented by insects. The amandim's song is described as clear and melodious. They build cup-shaped nests, typically in low vegetation, and lay two to four eggs. The species is not currently considered endangered, though habitat loss due to agricultural expansion poses a potential threat to its populations.
