Aluminum nitride (AlN) is a ceramic compound composed of aluminum and nitrogen, with the chemical formula AlN. It is a colorless solid that exhibits properties useful in various industrial and electronic applications. AlN is known for its high thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and chemical stability, making it a valuable material in advanced manufacturing and electronics.

Aluminum nitride is typically synthesized through a carbothermal reduction process, where aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) reacts with carbon (C) and nitrogen (N₂) at high temperatures, usually above 1,800°C. The reaction produces AlN along with carbon monoxide as a byproduct. Alternative methods, such as direct nitridation of aluminum metal or vapor-phase deposition, are also employed depending on the desired purity and application.

One of the most significant advantages of AlN is its exceptional thermal conductivity, second only to diamond among non-metallic materials. This property makes it highly suitable for use in heat sinks, substrates for semiconductor devices, and high-power electronic packaging. Additionally, AlN maintains its structural integrity at high temperatures, resisting thermal shock and oxidation, which enhances its reliability in harsh environments.

In electronics, AlN is often used as a substrate material for high-frequency and high-power devices, such as gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) transistors. Its low dielectric constant and high breakdown voltage further contribute to its effectiveness in reducing signal loss and improving device performance. Beyond electronics, AlN is utilized in cutting tools, refractories, and as a filler in composite materials to improve mechanical strength and thermal resistance.

Despite its benefits, aluminum nitride requires careful handling due to its reactivity with moisture, forming aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)₃) and ammonia (NH₃). Proper encapsulation or coating is often applied to prevent degradation in humid conditions. Its production and processing also involve high-energy requirements, contributing to its relatively higher cost compared to some alternative materials.
