An aftercooler is a heat exchanger installed on a compressed-air or gas system to remove the sensible heat from air that has just been discharged by a compressor. By lowering the air temperature, aftercoolers reduce the amount of moisture carried in the line and help protect downstream equipment, air treatment devices, and process control systems from heat-related wear and corrosion.

Aftercoolers rely on a cooling medium to transfer heat away from the compressed air. The most common configurations are air-cooled units that use ambient air and water-cooled units that circulate cooling water. In either case, condensation forms as the air cools and must be removed with condensate drains and traps.

Typical designs include finned-tube air-cooled exchangers and shell-and-tube or plate-type water-cooled exchangers. Materials commonly used are aluminum for air-cooled units and copper or stainless steel for water-cooled units. Design considerations include achieving the desired outlet temperature, minimizing pressure drop, and ensuring reliable condensate management under varying ambient and load conditions.

Industrial applications span manufacturing plants, workshops, and process industries where compressed air feeds pneumatic tools, controls, or instrument air. Benefits include drier air with a lower dew point, improved efficiency of downstream dryers and filters, reduced corrosion risk, and longer life for downstream equipment by lowering thermal and moisture-related stress.

Maintenance and operation require regular inspection of condensate drains, cleaning of heat-exchanger surfaces to prevent fouling, and verification that insulation remains intact. Selection and sizing depend on compressor discharge conditions, available cooling medium, ambient conditions, and required outlet temperature.
