An adrenal crisis occurs when the body is subjected to stress, such as illness or injury, and the adrenal glands cannot produce enough cortisol to cope. This can lead to rapid onset of symptoms like severe pain, vomiting, confusion, and shock, requiring immediate medical intervention.

Diagnosis involves blood tests to measure hormone levels, along with imaging studies to assess adrenal gland function and structure. Treatment generally consists of hormone replacement therapy, typically involving oral corticosteroids like hydrocortisone to replace cortisol and, in some cases, fludrocortisone to replace aldosterone. Patients with adrenal insufficiency must carry emergency medication, such as injectable hydrocortisone, to manage acute crises.

Prognosis for adrenalinbrist is generally good with proper management, though lifelong hormone replacement is necessary. Regular monitoring and adherence to treatment plans are essential to prevent complications and maintain quality of life.
