Acquiescentie is a term used primarily in Dutch to describe a passive acceptance or compliance with a situation, decision, or outcome without active protest or objection. The concept shares its roots with the English word acquiescence, which originates from the Latin acquiescere meaning "to become at ease or remain." In everyday language, a person who shows acquiescentie behaves in a subdued or compliant manner toward an authority or circumstance.

In legal contexts, acquiescentie can refer to the implicit consent granted by a party through inaction or silence. For example, when contractual obligations are not disputed over a lengthy period, the non‑objection may be interpreted as legal acquiescence, thereby binding the parties to the terms. This notion is especially relevant in Dutch civil law where estoppel and acquiescence can prevent a party from later renouncing a previously accepted agreement under certain conditions.

Psychologically, acquiescentie is often linked to concepts of compliance, obedience, and social conformity. Individuals may act acquiescent to avoid conflict, to maintain social harmony, or when they perceive the alternative as fraught with higher risk.
