Zündsteuergeräte, also known as ignition control units or ECUs (Engine Control Units) with ignition management functions, are critical electronic components in modern internal combustion engines. Their primary role is to precisely control the timing of the ignition spark, ensuring optimal combustion within the engine cylinders. This precise timing is crucial for a multitude of reasons, including maximizing engine power, improving fuel efficiency, and minimizing harmful emissions.

These devices receive input signals from various sensors throughout the engine. These sensors monitor parameters such as engine speed (RPM), throttle position, manifold pressure, engine temperature, and crankshaft position. Based on this real-time data, the Zündsteuergerät calculates the ideal moment to fire the spark plugs.
