Yttertyg

Yttertyg, in textile terminology, refers to the outer fabric that forms the visible surface of a garment or other textile product. It is the layer that determines appearance, texture, drape, and basic performance, and it is typically chosen for its durability and weather resistance as well as its aesthetic qualities. Yttertyg can be woven or knitted and may be used on its own or combined with other layers such as lining (foder) and padding (vaddering).

Common materials for yttertyg include natural fibers such as cotton, wool, linen, and silk, as well as synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and blends. The choice of fabric depends on the intended use, climate, and desired look and feel. In outerwear and technical garments, yttertyg often features finishes or treatments to enhance water repellency, wind resistance, or durability, including coatings, wax finishes, or laminated membranes.

In garment construction, yttertyg is joined to foder and sometimes to padding to form the complete garment. Care and maintenance depend on the fabric type and finishes; some yttertyg require dry cleaning or gentle washing, while others are machine washable. Reproofing may be necessary to restore water repellency after washing or wear.

Historically, the concept of a dedicated outer fabric developed with the rise of weatherproof outerwear and tailored garments, emphasizing performance alongside appearance. In modern textile practice, yttertyg remains a central concept in designing and assessing the external layer of clothing and upholstery.
