Yskäkohtauksia refer to episodes or bouts of coughing. Coughing is a reflex action of the body to clear the airways of irritants, mucus, or foreign particles. These episodes can vary significantly in intensity, duration, and frequency, depending on the underlying cause. A single cough or a few short coughs might be triggered by a dry throat or a minor irritation, while a prolonged and severe coughing fit could indicate a more serious medical condition.

The causes of coughing fits are diverse. They can range from common respiratory infections such as the common cold or influenza, to more chronic conditions like asthma, bronchitis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Allergies to pollen, dust mites, or pet dander can also induce coughing episodes, particularly in individuals with allergic rhinitis or asthma. Environmental factors like exposure to smoke, pollution, or strong fumes can also provoke coughing. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is another potential cause, where stomach acid irritates the esophagus and can trigger a cough reflex.

The characteristics of a coughing fit can provide clues to its origin. A dry, hacking cough might suggest irritation or inflammation, while a cough that produces phlegm or mucus could indicate an infection or increased mucus production. The timing of the cough, such as worsening at night or after eating, can also be significant. Persistent or severe coughing fits, especially those accompanied by other symptoms like fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, or unexplained weight loss, warrant medical attention to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
