Yehliu

Yehliu is a cape on the northern coast of Taiwan, located in Wanli District, New Taipei City. It is renowned for its unusual sea-eroded rock formations and is a popular day trip from Taipei.

Geology: The rocks are sedimentary, formed in ancient seas, and over millions of years have been sculpted by wind, waves, and salt. The landscape features hoodoo-like stacks and arches, with a concentration of formations along the headland.

Notable formations: The Queen's Head is the best-known formation, resembling a profile of a woman’s head. Other well-known rocks include the Fairy Shoe, Elephant Rock, and Ginger Rock; shapes result from differential erosion.

Visiting: Yehliu Geopark is a protected area with walkways and viewing platforms along the coast. A visitor center provides information and maps. The site is reachable by bus from Taipei; mornings and weekdays are less crowded. Wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for windy, salty conditions.

Conservation and significance: The geopark illustrates coastal erosion processes and the geological history of northern Taiwan. It is managed as a geological park by local authorities, with rules to protect the formations, such as staying on paths and not touching the rocks.
