Xoloitzcuintli

The Xoloitzcuintli, also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog, is a breed originating from Mexico. Its most distinctive feature is its lack of hair, although a coated variety does exist. The skin is typically dark, ranging from black to dark gray, brown, or even reddish. This breed is believed to be one of the oldest dog breeds in existence, with a history stretching back over 3,000 years. Archaeological evidence suggests they were revered by ancient civilizations such as the Aztecs, who believed they had healing properties and acted as guides for the souls of the deceased.

Xoloitzcuintlis are generally known for their calm, loyal, and affectionate nature. They can be reserved with strangers but are devoted to their families. Due to their lack of fur, they are often considered hypoallergenic, making them a popular choice for individuals with allergies. Their skin requires protection from extreme temperatures and sunlight, necessitating the use of sweaters in cold weather and sunscreen in the sun. The breed comes in three size varieties: toy, miniature, and standard. They are intelligent and can be trained, though they may possess an independent streak. Their exercise needs are moderate.
