XYY syndrome, also known as 47,XYY syndrome or Jacobs syndrome, is a chromosomal condition that affects males. It is characterized by the presence of an extra Y chromosome, resulting in a karyotype of 47,XYY instead of the typical 46,XY. This condition occurs randomly and is not inherited.

Individuals with XYY syndrome typically do not present with distinct physical features that are easily identifiable. Many individuals with XYY syndrome live healthy lives and may never be diagnosed. However, some may experience certain characteristics that can include taller stature compared to average, particularly during childhood and adolescence. They may also have a higher incidence of learning difficulties or developmental delays, such as speech delay. Some individuals might also experience increased behavioral issues, including impulsivity or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), though these are not universal.

The diagnosis of XYY syndrome is usually made through genetic testing, typically karyotyping, which can be performed at any stage of life. It is sometimes identified prenatally through amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, or it can be discovered later in life during investigations for other health concerns.

There is no cure for XYY syndrome, as it is a genetic condition. However, management focuses on addressing any associated challenges. Early intervention and support, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, educational support, and behavioral therapy, can significantly help individuals with XYY syndrome reach their full potential. Most individuals with XYY syndrome have normal sexual development and fertility.
