Workflowet

Workflowet is a term used in Scandinavian languages to denote the sequence of activities that together produce a desired outcome. In a broader sense it refers to the workflow, the structured flow of tasks, information, and people required to complete a process. The term is also used as a brand or product name in some contexts, without implying any single standardized standard.

In management and information systems, a workflow describes the ordered set of activities, the roles involved, the inputs and outputs, and the rules or constraints that govern how work moves from one step to the next. Modeling approaches commonly used to describe workflows include flowcharts, BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation), and value stream mapping. Modern practice often combines these models with automation to coordinate tasks, route work, enforce business rules, and track progress.

Typical elements of a workflow include tasks or activities, actors or automation agents, inputs and outputs, conditions and decision points, dependencies or sequencing, and data artifacts produced or consumed along the way. Workflows are implemented using software tools known as workflow management systems, orchestration platforms, or workflow automation solutions. They are applied across domains such as document approvals, manufacturing, healthcare, software development pipelines, and customer service.

Benefits commonly cited for well-designed workflows include increased efficiency, standardization, transparency, repeatability, and better compliance. Challenges can involve changing requirements, integration with heterogeneous systems, governance and ownership, data quality, and user adoption. Variants range from lightweight, ad-hoc workflows to formalized processes and case management approaches, with ongoing developments in related areas such as robotic process automation and process mining.
