Wiklina

Wiklina, often translated as wicker, refers to the craft of weaving pliable plant stems, most commonly willow (osier), into containers, furniture, and decorative objects. The term can denote either the raw material or the finished woven products produced by basketmakers and furniture makers across Europe and beyond.

Core materials include willow shoots, osier, and other flexible twigs such as reed or cane. The stems are harvested, coppiced, and sometimes steamed or boiled to increase pliability. Weaving is done around a supporting frame or in the form of coils and plaits, with common techniques including plain weaving, twining, and interlaced wrapping. Typical products include baskets, hampers, laundry bins, chairs, screens, and mats.

Wiklina has a long history in many European cultures, with strong traditions in rural communities. Ancient and medieval sources describe wicker furniture and baskets; in Poland, as in other Central and Eastern European regions, wicker crafts were important for everyday household goods and local economies. Regional styles vary in weaving patterns and frame construction.

Today, wiklina remains a viable craft, both in traditional workshops and contemporary design studios. Sustainable production arises from coppicing willow, a renewable resource, and modern finishes expand the range of outdoor and indoor furniture. Wicker products continue to be valued for lightness, flexibility, and recyclability.
