Widgetits

Widgetits are a family of modular educational robotics kits designed to teach coding, electronics, and engineering concepts through hands-on construction. The system centers on small interlocking blocks that snap together using magnetic connectors, enabling the rapid assembly of circuits and mechanical assemblies without soldering or tools.

First released in 2010 by EduTech Innovations, Widgetits were developed for classrooms and hobbyists. The line has since expanded to include processor, sensor, and actuator modules, along with central hubs, power packs, and wireless accessories. The modular approach supports incremental learning, from simple light-sensing projects to more complex autonomous systems, and has seen updates to strengthen durability and compatibility with classroom networks.

Design and components are standardized for ease of use. Modules are color-coded by function and designed to connect via a common interface that carries power and data. A central hub, often called Widgetit Core, provides a shared power bus and data routing, while individual blocks supply processing, sensing, or actuation capabilities. Power options include rechargeable packs and USB-C charging, with safety features appropriate for school environments. The ecosystem allows third-party modules to be added through open-architecture interfaces, expanding potential applications.

Software and programming environments emphasize accessibility. Widgetit Studio and companion apps offer block-based programming and Python support, with cross-platform compatibility for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Classroom and after-school use commonly center on project-based learning, prototyping, and demonstrations of sensors, control logic, and basic robotics.

Reception has been broadly positive for hands-on learning and ease of use, though critics note cost and durability considerations in some settings.
