Management of Waldnutzung is guided by principles of nachhaltige Waldbewirtschaftung (sustainable forest management), typically laid out in national or regional laws and guidelines. Planning instruments include forest management plans, periodic thinning and harvest rotations, reforestation or afforestation, and monitoring of growth, yield, health and ecological indicators. Certification schemes such as FSC and PEFC offer independent verification of sustainability standards and can influence market access for forest products.

Both public and private forests are affected by Waldnutzung policies, which set harvest limits, protect sensitive habitats, and consider non-market values like recreation, cultural heritage and aesthetic quality. The approach also emphasizes resilience to climate change and pest outbreaks, incorporating adaptive silviculture and diversification of species.
