Wärmebehandlung, or heat treatment, refers to a set of controlled heating and cooling operations applied to metals to alter their microstructure and mechanical properties. The goal is to achieve a specific balance of hardness, strength, toughness, and ductility while maintaining dimensional stability for the intended service conditions.

Several core processes are used, including annealing, normalizing, quenching and tempering, and precipitation hardening. Annealing softens metal and relieves internal stresses by heating to a high temperature and cooling slowly. Normalizing heats steel above the critical range and air-cools to refine grain structure and improve strength. Quenching and tempering hardens metal by rapid cooling from austenitizing temperatures and subsequent tempering. Precipitation hardening strengthens alloys by aging to form fine particles.

Case hardening methods, such as carburizing, nitriding, and carbonitriding, raise surface hardness while preserving a tougher, more ductile core. Diffusion coatings and surface treatments extend the range of properties. Induction heating or electric furnaces may be used for rapid or localized heating, and protective atmospheres or coatings minimize oxidation during heating.

Heat treatment is commonly applied to steels, but it is also used with aluminum alloys, nickel-based alloys, and some copper alloys. The choice of process depends on alloy composition, desired properties, and service environment. Risks include distortion, cracking, scale formation, and residual stresses, which are mitigated by proper fixturing, controlled heating rates, and quenching media.
