Voicetotext, or voice-to-text, is the technology that converts spoken language into written text using speech recognition systems. It enables real-time transcription, dictation, subtitles, and automated documentation across many devices and services.

Modern voice-to-text systems typically process audio by extracting spectral features and then decoding them into text. Traditional pipelines separate acoustic modeling and language modeling, using hidden Markov models and n-gram models. In recent years, end-to-end neural networks have become dominant, learning to map audio representations directly to words, often supporting streaming transcription for real-time use.

Performance is commonly measured by word error rate (WER), which can be influenced by microphone quality, background noise, speaker accent, speaking style, and domain vocabulary. In favorable conditions, accuracy can be high, while noisy or unfamiliar topics increase errors.

Applications include personal dictation, accessibility for people with hearing loss or motor impairments, live captions for video and broadcasts, automated transcription, and voice-enabled assistants.

Privacy and data handling vary by system. Cloud-based solutions transmit audio to servers for processing; on-device and privacy-preserving options exist. Users may control data sharing and opt out of model training.

History: early experiments in the 1950s and 1960s demonstrated simple digit recognition. From the 1990s onward, HMM-based approaches improved accuracy, followed by a shift to deep learning in the 2010s. Today, transformer-based and end-to-end models dominate many applications.
