Virstanpylväät
Virstanpylväät are historical road markers that were placed along routes to show travelers the distance to a predefined starting point or destination. The Finnish word combines virsta, referring to the verst, a traditional Russian unit of distance, with pylväs, meaning pillar. In practice, the markers indicated distances in versts and were often carved or painted onto a stone or wooden pillar, sometimes including the year of erection or the locality’s name.
The verst was approximately 1.0668 kilometers, a unit widely used in Finland during periods of Russian influence.
