pylväs

Pylväs (plural pylväät) is a vertical structural element used to support loads or to mark a location. In Finnish, the term covers architectural columns as well as posts and tall freestanding supports in various constructions, from buildings to outdoor installations.

In architecture, pylväät can be load-bearing or decorative. They may feature bases and capitals and come in various cross sections, such as cylindrical, rectangular, or polygonal. Common materials include stone, brick, concrete, steel, and wood. In classical architecture, pylväät may adhere to traditional orders (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian) or appear in contemporary, minimalistic forms.
