Vertsmark is a fictional open-standard framework for annotating vegetation health data and land-cover markers in ecological monitoring. It provides a common schema and terminology for tagging vegetation status, stress factors, and habitat indicators across disparate data sources, including satellite imagery, aerial drones, and in-situ sensors. The standard emphasizes interoperability and modular extension, allowing researchers and agencies to share annotated maps and time series without vendor restriction.

The name blends "verts"—a reference to green vegetation—with "mark," signaling an annotation or tag. The term is used in documentation and has no official separate meaning outside the standard's branding.

Vertsmark originated through a collaboration between the International Ecology Data Alliance and the GreenTech Consortium in the early 2010s. Version 1.0 was published in 2012, with major revisions in 2015 (2.0) and 2020 (3.0) that expanded metadata fields and introduced a formal extension mechanism.

Technical characteristics: The core data shape is JSON-based, with a GeoJSON-compatible feature vector for each observation. Each marker carries properties such as id, timestamp, location, health_score (0–100), and optional stressors (drought, pests, disease). The schema supports optional extensions and maps to existing standards for metadata and provenance.

Applications: Used in forest health monitoring, precision agriculture, watershed vegetation management, and wildfire risk assessment. It is designed to work with satellite platforms, UAV surveys, and ground sensors, and is commonly published to open-data portals.

Reception and status: Vertsmark has been adopted by several national agencies and research consortia, though critics point to potential data-quality issues and the risk of fragmentation if implementations diverge. The maintainers emphasize backward compatibility and a formal governance model.
