Verdissement

Verdissement is a term used to describe the process of making a system, policy, or activity greener or more environmentally sustainable. Derived from the French verb verdir, meaning to green, verdissement refers to the integration of environmental objectives into decision-making and practice across sectors.

In policy and governance, verdissement denotes the greening of public policy. This includes incorporating climate and biodiversity goals into transport, energy, housing, agriculture, and industry, as well as implementing measures to reduce emissions, promote renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, and encourage sustainable land use. In urban contexts, verdissement often involves green infrastructure, increased parks and trees, sustainable mobility networks, and building retrofits.

Mechanisms commonly used to achieve verdissement include regulatory standards, incentives for clean technologies, carbon pricing, subsidies for efficiency and renewables, investment in public transit, and support for the circular economy. Monitoring relies on indicators such as greenhouse gas emissions, energy intensity, air and water quality, and land-use change.

Critics warn that verdissement can be uneven or superficial if it relies on weak targets, offsets, or greenwashing. Effective verdissement typically requires credible measurement, transparent reporting, just transition considerations for workers and communities, and alignment with social and economic objectives, not just environmental ones.

The concept is closely related to and sometimes used interchangeably with green growth or greening, particularly in French-language policy discourse and European Union contexts, where it is frequently discussed as a path toward sustainable development.
